Nostalgia Del Buio
A Cochon Records Compilation
Contributor: Eli Ellsworth
Creating a worthwhile compilation album is oftentimes a tricky endeavor. It requires an intimate familiarity with a specific music scene and its artists to be successful. Such a risky project can potentially wind up including disposable bands and wearisome tracks, which rarely translates into longevity.
Even worse, imagine all those horrific benefit anthologies! You know, the bands that unite to raise funds for a common cause by offering some of their worst unreleased material. You’ve undoubtedly seen several variations of these plaguing your favorite record store, haven’t you? Well, thankfully somebody finally did it right. San Francisco’s Cochon Records has produced an exceptional mélange of intoxicating goth-inspired dance-punk and darkwave ensembles.
Nostalgia Del Buio is instantly recognizable because of its visually enticing packaging. It features stunning photographic images from Jessie Eva (Subtonix and The Vanishing) and folds open to reveal not one, but two discs full of underground favorites! The artists contained herein include Lost Sounds, Glass Candy, Black Ice, Dynasty, Sixteens, Veronica Lipgloss and The Evil Eyes, Abunda Bida, The Vanishing, Anti Quark, Gravy Train, Six Foot Sloth, and The Phantom Limbs.
Obviously, some bands are a bit more well-known than others, but that is typically the purpose of devising a compilation, isn’t it? You’re introduced to bands you might never have discovered if they hadn’t been included alongside those having greater exposure.
And you’ll have plenty of substantial contenders to choose from, considering each disc boasts more than 20 exquisitely danceable, peculiar and murky-toned bands. Each group has their own unique quality, ranging from the malevolently sinister to the sleazy and uproariously perverse. A few selections are even exclusive tracks that can’t be found elsewhere!
Clearly, this is nocturnal music inspired by the detached conditions of egregious urbanized living. The creators of this compilation are no fools. The evil they have embraced permeates throughout.
Nostalgia Del Buio is an Italian phrase that translates to "Nostalgia of the Darkness." It literally means that some people hold an abnormal desire for past situations that were mysterious, obscure, threatening, gloomy and wicked. If you’re extremely susceptible to feverish synth-driven quirkiness and you desperately yearn for the shadow of darkness, Nostalgia Del Buio can satisfy your fixation.
